In archaic Roman religion, small towers were built at the crossroads, and an altar was set before them upon which offerings were given to nature spirits. Guardian spirits known as Lares were associated with these towers and with demarcation in general, as well as seasonal themes related to agriculture. These towers may be the foundation of the "Watchtowers" appearing in the ritual circles of Wiccans and other modern witches.

A Watchtower is the station an Elemental guardian protects, of one of the four cardinal points. Alternately, the Watchtowers are the abodes of the guardians. Often believed to represent the four elements, the Watchtowers are invoked during ritual to cast the magick circle.

Many Wiccan circle-castings no longer mention the Watchtowers by name. The following Elemental summons include addressing the Watchtowers. It is also important to note that the candles used for the four Elements in Celtic magick are red in the east; white in the south; grey in the west; and black in the north. Where most traditions dictate the colors are yellow in the east; red in the south; blue in the west; and green in the north. We are including the traditional colors in parentheses.

Move from the Priests or Priestess position in front of the altar, where you left off after your circle cast and go to the eastern quarter of the circle. Light the red (yellow) candle and hold your hand up in greeting. You may also salute the Elemental with your dagger, sword or wand instead of your hand. Visulize the guardian coming before you, feel the wind on your face and Say:

"Hail to the Guardians of the Watchtower to the East,
Graceful Sylphs of Air, I summon stir and call you forth
to witness this rite and guard this circle as
I journey between the worlds."

Step back and draw the invoking pentagram of Air with your athame, sword, or wand. This seals the Watchtower and binds the protections in place throughout your ritual.

Continuing deosil around the circle to the southern quarter, light the white (red) candle and hold up your hand. Visualize the guardian coming before you, hear the roar of a bonfire the heat of the sun on your face and say:

"Hail to the Guardians of the Watchtower to the South,
Passionate Salamanders of Fire, I summon, stir and call you forth
to witness this rite and to guard this circle as
I journey between the worlds."

Step back and draw the invoking pentagram of Fire with your athame, sword, or wand. This seals the Watchtower and binds the protections in place throughout your ritual.

Moving deosil to the west; light the grey (blue) candle and hold up your hand. Visualize the guardian coming before you, the crash of the ocean waves the sweet taste of rain on your lips and say:

"Hail to the Guardians of the Watchtower to the West,
Playful Undines of Water, I summon, stir and call you forth
to witness this rite and to guard this circle as
I journey between the worlds."

Step back and draw the invoking pentagram of Water with your athame, sword, or wand. This seals the Watchtower and binds the protections in place throughout your ritual.

End by going to the north; light the black (green) candle and greet the Element, visualize the guardian coming before you, the smell of pine needles, the joy of making mud-pies and say:

"Hail to the Guardians of the Watchtower of the North,
Strong Gnomes of Earth, I summon, stir and call you forth
to witness this rite and to guard this circle as
I journey between the worlds."

Step back and draw the invoking pentagram of Earth with your athame, sword, or wand. This seals the Watchtower and binds the protections in place throughout your ritual.
