We breathe it in every day. It surrounds us, fills us, yet often we don't even notice it: Air. Air is the Element of the intellect, it is the realm of thought, which is the first step toward creation. Magickally speaking, Air is the clear, uncluttered, pure visualization which is a powerful tool for change. It is also movement, the impetus that sends the visualization out toward manifestation. It rules spells and rituals involving travel, instruction, freedom, obtaining knowledge, discovering lost items, uncovering lies, and so on. Throughout the long history of Pagan spirituality, incense has been used as a valuable tool in ritual work. Incense is symbolic of the element Air and assists in opening the doorway to the spiritual realm. In times long ago people would burn sweet-smelling herbs and wood to purify and cleanse their homes or the areas where they performed ritual magick.
Usually represented by an object that floats in the air or flies, in alchemy it is represented by an upward pointed triangle that has been bisected at the peak. In Alchemy the triangle represents the horizon, if you connect four triangles side to side you get a square, or a box split in to quarters. As the four classical elements were divided. And as with many things of Celtic lore each side of the triangle completes the theoretic Triune or Triad.
In the Triangle you will notice the line about a third of the way down from its tip, representing land, or the Earth against the sky. The point facing upn indicates the astral, otherworld or heaven. The open end facing down represents eternity. Upon closer inspection the triangle is phallic in appearence, showing the marriage of heaven and earth. Connecting back to the origin of life. A source of masculine power.
Air wraps around the entire surface of the planet. It links all things together, tucked under the same sky like a big comfy blanket touching each and every one of us. This connection sounds like a very powerful medium for communication. By using incense in your spell work, rituals or meditations, you can achieve a greater connection with deity and have a calmer and more awakened spirit.
Of all the elements, Air is perhaps the most illusive. It can be the most difficult to describe, but can also be one of the most vibrant. Air brings us the light sensation of a cool breeze, the sudden rage of a storm, and the sweet smell of every scent we experience. An Airy Aura. We can find Air Spirits all around us, just like we'd find other elemental Spirits in rippling lakes, the woodsy Earth, or dancing candle flames. Know that Air Spirits are nearby; try to feel them as individuals. Pick one out and just listen to it - whether a howling night wind or the tingle of wind chimes.
Spells involving Air usually include the act of placing an object in the Air or dropping something off the side of a mountain or other high place so that the object actually connects physically with the Element. Air is a masculine Element, being dry, expansive, and active. It is the Element that excels in places of learning, and which is at work while we theorize, think, and ponder.
Air rules the East because this is the direction of the greatest light, and the light of wisdom and consciousness. Its color is yellow, the yellow of the Sun and of the sky at dawn, and its season is spring. Air governs the magick of the four winds, most divinations, concentration and visualization magick. Magically, the element of Air is often associated with communication.
Connecting with the element of Air can be quite simple, the magick of bubbles floating away from you climbing higher and higher. A balloon can easily be used as a magickal conduit. Pick a balloon colored to fit your wish. Take in a big-big breath of the magic that surrounds you, and breathe it into the balloon. Whoosh! When your balloon is full, take a magic marker and write your wish upon the balloon. Or maybe draw and create a magical "balloon friend" with a specific job to do for you. Then with a sudden burst, break the balloon and release the energy stored up inside.
Enjoying a day outside, try calling up the wind.
Try the simple act of breathing as a magical device. Inhale. Take in from your surroundings. Gather the energy around you. Take in as much as you can handle - your own body will let you take no more, and no less. As the seconds fly by, your body is absorbing millions of tiny oxygen atoms which the blood in your lungs will send to every cell in your body. Feel it change you; feel its magick become yours for just a moment in time. Then exhale... Release your magickal breath out into the Air currents all around you. Send it forth with a sigh, and let the winds carry your wish wherever it needs to go.
